Our Tips

BANTRY
A charming little harbor town with a traditional weekly market with many local producers.
Bantry also has many small craft stores in traditional Irish style.
From April to October, the historicBantry House invites you to stroll through the beautiful garden, which was laid out in the 17th century.

BANTRY BOAT TOUR From Bantry you can go on great boat tours. For dolphin and whale watching, fishing, swimming or just to admire the beautiful nature. We recommend Bantry Bay Charters:

AHAKISTA
Ahakista is a small fishing village with a harbor. From here you can charter a sailing ship or indulge yourself with a fine drink and a culinary dinner in ” Arundels by the Pier “.

SHEEP’S HEAD LIGHTING TOWER
No one who visits the Sheep’s Head peninsula can avoid this lighthouse. It’s a small but doable hike to the tip of the peninsula that is always worth it! From here you can only see the wild Atlantic.

SHEEP’S HEAD WALK
This great walking trail has a main route that starts and finishes in Bantry. This main route covers 93 km. You can hike the entire Sheep’s Head Way main trail in 6 days or one of over 25 smaller circular walks (1-7 hours).
You will also find one or two stone circles along the way. It is also worth making one or two detours to the various bays (Dooneen pier on the south side of Dunmanus Bay, Glanroon on Bantry Bay or the Cove on Bantry Bay on the north side).

GOUGANE BARRA
Gougane Barra is an enchanting place, so picturesquely situated on a lake. A small monastery was built there in the 6th century by Saint Finbarr. In the 19th century a small, pretty chapel was built on the still existing ruins, which is still often booked for weddings.
A large forest area right next to it is ideal for a hike.

GARNISH ISLAND
This island is a small idyll in the south of Ireland and is also known as Ireland’s Garden of Eden – and not without good reason, we think. In a sheltered location in the harbor of Glengariff, Garinish Island is home to a breathtaking variety of plants. The Mediterranean garden invites you to stroll across the island. At the entrance there is a tea room where you can sit by the water and strengthen yourself. Every now and then a seal shows up off Garinish Island, maybe you’re lucky!
This little island has also made it into the film world – a few films were shot there.

THREE CASTLE
The fortress was built in the 12th century by a pilgrim and wanderer named Donagh na Aimrice O’Mahoney on the Mizen Head peninsula.
Some distance from the famous Mizen Head lighthouse you will find the breathtaking scenery of this ruin. After a short hike, these three ruins pile up. It is on the edge of the 100m cliffs. There is one of the highest surviving medieval walls in Ireland. There are also spectacular views of the surrounding land and sea from Mizen Head to the Beara Peninsula.

BARLEY COVE
Barley Cove is home to the most beautiful beach on the Mizen Peninsula. An extensive dune landscape stretches far inland here. The sheltered beach is very popular in the summer months. There are other beaches in the bay. The beach itself has been designated a Special Protection Area by the European Union as the sand dunes offer a variety of wildlife and interesting habitats.

CASTLETOWNBERE
Castletownbere is a small but lively town located in the heart of the beautiful Beara Peninsula. It lies between the mountains of Caha and Slieve Miskish and overlooks the spectacular Berehaven Harbour.
